What I’ve Learned in 3 Years of Business and Writing Bids

It all began in 2021, during the height of the global pandemic, when I decided to take a leap and set up my own business. Initially, I worked as an associate for big consultancies, but after a year, I realised that small businesses deserved more than just being a profit margin for larger companies.

When I started, I was confident in my ability to handle anything related to bids—it’s second nature to me. But running a business required wearing many hats. Over the past three years, I had to learn how to do marketing, sales, and financial management. These skills haven’t just helped me grow; they’ve enabled me to help other businesses thrive too.

How Do You Unwind as a Business Owner?

Being a business owner can be full-on, so finding ways to unwind is essential. For me, it’s all about balance.

  • Walking my dog, Star: She lives up to her name—an absolute Star by name and Star by nature. Everyday, no matter the weather, starts with a walk with Star!

  • Running and Powerlifting: I’m an active runner and a trainee powerlifter. In fact, I have my first platform competition coming up in February 2025!

One of the hardest things to learn as a small business owner is saying no when you're too busy. It’s tempting to keep working, but rest is crucial. A single hour is just 4% of your day—there’s no excuse not to give yourself that time to recharge.

What Lessons Have You Learned as a Business Owner?

If I could share one key lesson, it’s this: don’t give up.

There will be days when nothing goes to plan, the business or a client throws you a curveball, and you think, "Maybe I should just go back to a 9-5 job." It’s in those moments that you need to give yourself a break, find something that motivates you, and keep going. Resilience is everything. I tell myself all the time, if it were easy, everyone would be doing it.

What Are Your Goals for 2025?

Looking ahead to 2025, my goals are clear:

  1. Maintain Steady Growth: Continue building on the progress we have made.

  2. Focus on Client Satisfaction: Ensure clients are happy with the service and winning bids.

  3. Refine Processes: Make every aspect of our service even more special.

  4. Nurture Relationships: Regular check-ins with clients are non-negotiable, even when there’s no live work.

Aftercare is important to me. When I worked as an associate, I often heard clients say they never heard from the big consultancies after the project ended. That’s not how I operate. My clients are more than just business partners—some have even become close friends.
